Join Our Online Japanese Learning Groups
So how exactly does this work? And how can it help you to learn Japanese?
When the time for the game arrives, registered players use a link (sent beforehand via email) to join a call on GoogleMeet or Zoom. From there, a capable host and Japanese teacher will guide players to learn Japanese by playing the game on a virtual tabletop. Players will encounter many exciting topics as they move through the game, and try their best to speak about those topics using Japanese. Single words, short phrases, or complete sentences related to the topics are fine – it’s whatever the players feel comfortable with. Players can use online translators or advice from the teacher to help themselves express what they want to say.

- Japanese teacher in the room to correct and guide
- other positive, supportive Japanese learners will join
- prizes awarded at the end of the year (must join 5 or more games)
To sign up to play, a small fee of 5usd is asked for, and that helps to ensure the reliability of our game groups.
ABOUT THE GAME
The game that we use is called Heading Into Language Land. It’s a fantasy-themed game that I designed specifically to inspire and motivate language learners. Here’s some quick information about it…

MEET OUR PLAYERS
Our Japanese group has been meeting since 2023 and still meets to this day. We have seen many players come and go during the intervening years, but there are several core players who deserve special recognition. If you join a game, you will undoubtedly have the chance to make friends with them!
Our group is currently hosted by a friendly, detail-oriented, and reliable individual, I will affectionately refer to here as Sunny because he prefers to keep a low profile on the internet. But in the actual games, he will surely be glad to meet you and make friends. He has been a pillar of our group for a long time now.
The effective and experienced Kanako is our dedicated Japanese teacher. She is native Japanese speaker from Japan. She has joined many games, sometimes just to guide from the side, but oftentimes to join in and play. We really appreciate how reliable and generous she has been with her time and talent over the years, as well as her careful explanation of subtle points related to the language.
Leon is an incredible ally of mine who runs his own language exchanges in Florida and sometimes uses my games at his events. He often joins our Japanese group to learn Japanese or our Spanish group to help teach. Look up The Language Party if you’re ever in Florida and want to be a part of what he’s got going on.
Alessandro from Italy has been a big supporter of LCG for a while now. He often joins our Japanese group as a supplement to his own Japanese classes and examination preparations (JLPT). He is humorous, well-traveled, and knowledgeable.
Though Ian is currently on hiatus, I don’t want to leave him out because he helped to get this group started. He joined many games as a player and later hosted a lot of games, too. Not only that, but he gave valuable feedback on the development and direction of the game and even made some Japanese grammar cards to integrate with the game. I hope and expect he will return to play with us in the future.
