When I started making Chinese Champions, it was a personal mission. Even though I lived in China and had the opportunity to chat in Chinese on a daily basis, I still found myself wanting a language-based game. I wanted a game that would help me to keep improving my Chinese even in my downtime or on lazy afternoons. So that’s how the idea was born. Since then, a small band of my friends and handful of international customers have enjoyed this game for similar reasons.
Helen Liu (a native Chinese speaker) and I completed all the artwork, translations, and rules together. We obssessed over the small details, meticulously tested the game, and argued over translation and artistic decisions. Now, we are eager to ship these cards to you no matter where you live so that you can learn colorful Chinese with your friends like we do. Because we are a small business, you can expect fast, friendly, and personalized communications from us, too.
Still not quite sure if this game is right for you? Let me tell you a little more about it!
The game is played in a similar way to other card games like Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, or Yu-Gi-Oh! But if you don’t know those games, that’s okay! Basically, to win a Chinese Champions game, you must use strategy to weaken or destroy your opponent’s cards and strengthen your own. The difference with Chinese Champions Card Game is that you need to have memorized the vocabulary on a card to be able to use it during the game!
And how does that work exactly?
Each turn, your opponent will draw the top card of a deck and test you on the vocabulary word. If you know it, you can take the card and use it to fight! If you can’t remember the word, or mistranslate it, the card is discarded. In short, if your memory is bad, you get punished by losing resources. But it’s always possible for a card to reenter the game, so always try your best to remember the name of every card when it comes up!
I have published some videos on the Language Card Games Youtube Channel to teach you how to pronounce the words on every card and to show you some warm-up games you can use to help yourself memorize the words before a real battle!
If you want to follow this game, I welcome you to join Chinese Champions Card Game on Facebook, Youtube, or Twitter. I have already started designing the next series of CCCG cards here at my humble abode in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. I post pictures and videos now and then that show what I’m up to.

ABOUT THE CREATOR
My name is Matt Boyle. In 2011, I felt the urge to leave America and teach English in China. I’ve lived there ever since. Not only do I love Chinese language and culture, but I have a passion for designing and playing all types of games. It seemed natural for me to create Chinese Champions to blend those two interests. Now, with just a shuffle of the cards and a roll of the dice, it’s easy to learn Chinese words with my friends.
